House history

The name chosen – CASA VERMELHA – is due to the fact that, the house has always had a red colour that makes it unique and characteristic.
It was built in the twenties of the XXth century by the grandfather of the actual owners and in it have lived, since then, the three following generations. It is a family home full of childhood memories, of experiences, of love, of happy moments.

The construction combines a great endurance (stone walls) to a fine taste. In the interior, exotic wood from Brasil was used and in the exterior it is possible to see some frontons with glazed tile panels.
Now adapted to new functions, it was restored, having the concern of preserve the original design and of introducing the new and indispensable elements to the modern conveniences. It was classified by IPPAR as “building of municipal interest” mot only by its architectonical characteristics that have marked an epoch but also by the special and notorious mark which prints in the urban scenery of Foz Côa.

Connected to this house was the Fozcoense Cinema which was built, on the same epoch, by its owner, man of great vision and initiative, who installs on that time and in an interior small town an important entertainment.
His daughter and heiress obtained in Oporto, in the cinema S. João, in 1928, the diploma of projectionist, to direct technically the cinema. It was the first woman in Portugal to obtain that title. The cinema is closed and it has been deactivated from a long time. Other times and publics came with the television.
The house is located in the urban centre of Vila Nova de Foz-Côa and it is surrounded by a great space, planted with trees, with grass and swimming-pool where one feels like resting and enjoy the quietness.
